A DRIFTING sailing dinghy was recovered late this evening by Tynemouth RNLI inshore lifeboat after it was set adrift from Tynemouth Haven.

The small yellow sailing dinghy belonging to Tynemouth Sailing Club had been reported to Humber Coastguard as drifting alongside the inside of Tynemouth pier towards the sea and appeared to have been deliberately set adrift. There was no-one reported on board the boat but the lifeboat was requested to confirm that and to prevent the boat from becoming a hazard to other vessels.

The inshore lifeboat launched at 22:32 and the volunteer crew quickly located the drifting boat, and towed it back to the Haven where they dragged it up the beach where it would be safe from being refloated by the tide. The lifeboat then returned to station.

Lifeboat (relief): D-720 Norma and Bill Burleigh
